ABOUT THE WINE

HB Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon- the wine Tony Peju dedicated to his wife Herta, “HB”.

Let us delve into the backstory—HB Peju, an artist who has been painting throughout her life, held a deep affection for her Los Angeles home, but was not in love with the idea of moving to Napa Valley in 1983. But Tony Peju had a vision that HB could see, so to Napa they went. Once settled into their new life in Napa, Tony named their Rutherford Vineyard in her honor, calling it the HB Vineyard. The winery itself was christened PEJU PROVINCE, but Tony made sure to honor HB’s sacrifice with an inscription on the entrance door dedicated to HB, recognizing her departure from the comfort of Southern California.

Fast forward to the start of the new millennial, Tony wanted to create a truly unique label for the special occasion and for the Cabernet Sauvignon harvested from our HB Vineyard. Tony sought the talents of Napa artist Heather King, who he commissioned for a new label. The Harvest Dance is a watercolor that depicts the Harvest Dance marble sculpture that was installed on the estate in 1993. The artwork was intended to grace Magnum bottles of our HB Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon solely in commemoration of the new millennium. The label, grand in size and a true work of art left a profound impression on HB, who convinced Tony to reuse it. She believed its beauty was too magnificent to be confined to a single use, leading to its appearance once more in 2003, now on a 750 ml bottle. As HB insisted, we adopted the larger, taller Magnum labels for the subsequent 750 mL reserve wines, which is still the standard practice at PEJU to this day.

In the tapestry of our wines, HB’s artistic contributions continue to shine through. With each sip of HB Cabernet Sauvignon, we invite you to savor not just the rich flavors but also the rich history and deep connection to the Peju family.
