momento mori — the series title
is latin for "remember your mortality" (or remember you will die)
Ancient subject for artists.

These images you are viewing are the culmination of time and labor.
The component pieces are collected, aged and manipulated, then
photographed, or scanned at an extremely high resolution. The
component image is then hand painted to prepare it for the final
composition. Each piece is then assembled and manipulated further
to achieve the result you see here.

Each work is printed individually by the artist in the studio on 100%
cotton, acid free, mould-made paper. After printing the image is inspected
and worked by hand to meet the artists vision. Upon completion the
artists marque is embossed through the signature to ensure authenticity.

Rick Helf was born in New York and comes from a family with a
creative history, including the head of the New York Stone Masons
Guild who was responsible for some of the most iconic stone carvings
in Manhattan. Operating his own design and illustration studio for
the last 20 years, his work has shown in the Smithsonian Institute,
the National Building Museum, and various galleries across the
United States.

He has been a resident of the San Francisco Bay Area for the last
thirty-five years.
