‘Tis the season for our holiday catalog photo shoot! It’s the time of year when we venture from the vineyards of Napa Valley to the hustle and bustle of San Francisco and join our photographer and friend, Philip Harvey, for a two-day photo shoot.
As the sun was rising, we packed our cars full of wine, glasses, merchandise, food and décor and headed to the studio in SoMa (which is the large SF neighborhood south of Market Street).
It can be a lengthy process to get each photo just right, and we’re giving you a behind-the-scenes look at some of our favorite, and most challenging, photos from this year’s shoot.
1. Classic Bottle Shots
Every bottle of Peju wine gets its 15 minutes of fame in the studio. It doesn’t seem like a simple bottle shot would take a lot of time or effort, but these were often our most difficult shots. Combine bright lights and reflective wine bottles and you’re presented with a challenge.
For the majority of these shots, it is not as simple as point the camera and shoot, and we often have to combine multiple versions of the same image to get the lighting just right. The most important aspect of these shots is ensuring that guests can read the label in the catalog and on our website, so you all know what to expect! Our finished product ends up looking like the shot below: a beautiful bottle of Peju, ready for you to gift to your friends and family this holiday season!
2. Unique Bottle Shots with Props
We took advantage of the time we had in the studio to shoot some photos for our wine club newsletters. We wanted to do something different this year, so we played around with what we coined, “dramatic and moody” lighting.
We hit a few creative roadblocks along the way, as our goal was to create a unique image for each bottle, but we overcame these obstacles by using different props, backgrounds, surfaces, lighting techniques and camera angles. After each photo was taken, we got to review it on the computer screen and adjust the props, lighting and angles accordingly. We ended up with photos that we could not be happier with, and we hope you love them too!
3. Fun Holiday Images
Finally, we got to our favorite part of the experience: holiday photos! Not only did we enjoy this part of the day because we love the holiday season, but we got to make a mess, and who doesn’t love that? For our fall photos, we incorporated burlap, leaves and apples to encapsulate the feelings of a crisp autumn day.
Since no holiday party is complete without bubbly, we popped a few bottles of sparkling rosé wine and staged a fun shot with different styles of champagne flutes. It was a nice end to two long days of shooting!
At the end of a crazy 48 hours, we loaded our boxes of wine and props back into our cars and headed back to the winery exhausted, but pleased with our results. Look for Peju Province Winery’s 2015 Holiday Catalog later this year! We can’t wait to share all of these photos with you.
